The Vision of Patrons Gallery
We believe that art is the most powerful form of education. Our mission is to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice by providing a dedicated space for student and professional exhibitions. Through our curated events and student engagement, we aim to inspire the next generation of artists by supporting the resources needed for their creative growth.

Founded in 1979 as the first student art gallery in the United States, Patrons Gallery has a long tradition of nurturing creativity and artistic excellence. We are proud to be part of Shawnee Mission North High School and remain committed to fostering the artistic growth, confidence, and achievement of North art students.

The Vision That Became a Legacy
Patrons Gallery was born from the vision of Shawnee Mission North art teacher Greg Brantman, who began teaching at North in 1974. Greg believed that students deserved the opportunity to experience art beyond the classroom - to exhibit their work, see professional artists' work, and understand themselves as working artists.

In 1979, that vision became a reality. With the support of community members and more than 400 patrons, Greg and a dedicated group of volunteers created what was, to our knowledge, the first student art gallery of its kind in the nation.

For more than four decades, Patrons Gallery has enriched the lives of Shawnee Mission North students and the North community. Its success has always been a community effort, sustained by students, teachers, parents, alumni, and volunteers. The gallery provides a place where student artwork can be celebrated alongside professional exhibitions, giving young artists an experience that reaches far beyond the traditional classroom.
